What is the story of Christmas decorations?

It was in the 4th century that Christmas became the most important holiday for Christians. However, Christmas tree, now considered an undisputed symbol of Christmas, appeared only around 400 years ago. Christmas tree decoration is a family event which brings together all generations, in France and around the world.   decoration sapin d noel

The main decoration were 12 candles, each representing one month of the year. They were the symbol of the eternal light of Bethlehem. Apart from the candles, apples were popular Christmas tree ornaments, they symbolized the tree from the paradise. Our ancestors also used pineapples, honey cakes, nut shells, gingerbread, and other natural products to decorate their tree. Some used ornaments made of straw, paper and wood chips. Eventually, chains of coloured paper, small paintings with Christmas motifs, ribbons and even small rag dolls were added to the Christmas trees around the world.

However, the 19 th century has brought a sudden change to the tradition of hanging apples on the Christmas tree. Following a poor harvest in Alsace, a glassware from Strasbourg had the idea to replace the apples with glass balls! This idea was so innovative and was greeted with such enthusiasm that all the glass artisans in the region started manufacturing Christmas tree decorations.

At that time, the most appreciated Christmas balls came from Lorraine and Bohemia. They were fully hand-made following the same technique we still use today in our factory in the Czech Republic. In order to keep the tradition of our ancestors alive, our designers and ball artisans make ornaments in the shapes of pinecones, gingerbread houses, apples, etc. giving you the chance to enjoy a traditionally decorated Christmas tree with a modern touch.
